What’s so great about “Back to School”?

Saturday, August 15th, 2015

-1The end of Summer is near and some of the kids, and teachers, are already back in school.  Kids dread it and parents love it but either way, it’s a start of something new.  It’s the beginning of new friendships, new skill building and new opportunities.  It is a time to put your best face forward and what could be better than a new look to go with a great attitude?  We love hair and creating a new looks is just one of the ways we get to flex our creative muscle.  Are you ready for a change?

Skin care rules to live by

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

Here are a few basic do’s and don’ts of skincare.

Do- Scrub your face lightly.  It helps to smooth and soften skin.  Don’t- Use excessive force.  Scrubbing too hard can irritate your skin.  Just glide gently over skin in light circular motions.

Do- Make SPF your BFF.  Wear a dzay cream with SPF to help protect your skin from potentially harmful UV rays.  Don’t- Skip your skin’s “morning smoothie”.  Skin tends to lose moisture through the night and needs AM replensihment to look fresh, smooth and hydrated.

Do- Moisturize at bedtime.  Night cream is designed to help skin repair itself while you sleep.  Don’t- Neglect uyour neck.  Your neck has fewer oil glands than your face, so it can be more prone to wrinkling.

Do- Tap, tap, tap…gently.  Pat cresam under the eye area and over the top of the lid.  Continue along brow bone.  Don’t rub it in.  Rubbing can pull delicate skin in the eye area.

Do- Think thin to thick.  Apply the thinnest to thickest products. Think serums to creams.  Don’t- Forget your timing.  Wait one minute to let your serum sink in before you layer on cream, or it will rub your serum right off.

Brighten up for Summer

Monday, May 28th, 2012

Warmer, Summer weather means stashing your fairer shades of makeup and dark lipsticks in favor of more vibrant shades of pink and gold.  Most of our guests come to the Salon requesting lighter hair-color for the warmer months.   Here are five top trends for Summer makeup that will make your ‘Summer look’ a beautiful one.  1) Fruity Hues. Nothing says Summer like a neutral face with a pop of melon on the cheeks or lips.  Be sure to use the fruity hue on your favorite feature to highlight it!  2) Spring Stain.  Winter textures are usually matte, while Summer is glossy.  Top a lip stain with a gloss that contains vitamin E to preserve color and keep lips hydrated.  3) Brow Fix.  Be sure to have your brows shaped and even lightened a bit to match your new Summer hair-color.  Don’t forget to fill them in with a softer shade of brow powder also.  4) A Brighter Shade of Pink.  Top your bronzer with a swirl of a pink illuminator.  This combination of products will keep a healthy balance and add a glow to your cheeks.  5) Colorful Black Mascara.  These mascaras have a black base and a hint of color. For green eyes, try a plum black and for brown eyes, try a navy black.

Feed your Hair!

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

What we put in our bodies can greatly improve the health of our hair.  If you want gorgeous locks try eating more of the following foods:

Salmon- Omega 3 vitamin for strong hair.

Dark green veggies- Vitamin A and C which helps produce sebum to feed the follicle, plus iron and calcium.

Beans- Rich in protein, iron, biotin and zinc.

Nuts- Contains zinc, which helps prevent hair loss.

Poultry- High quality protein.

Eggs- High in B12.

Whole grains- Zinc, iron and B vitamins.

Oysters- A potential aphrodisiac and they contain zinc.

Low-fat dairy- High in calcium.

Carrots- Vitamin A for healthy scalp.

In the end, a balanced and healthy diet will promote both a healthy body and healthy hair.  To ensure the proper care of your hair ask one of our stylists to recommend the proper Eufora haircare regimen.  Many of the styling products in Eufora Classic and the Men’s HERO line contain wear-in treatments that will nourish your hair all day.

What to look for in a Salon

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

When looking for a new hair Salon, simply look around.  Is it clean?  How do the stylists present themselves? Are you greeted when you arrive?  An initial reaction can tell you a lot about the experience that will follow.

Searching for a new stylist?

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

If you don’t feel like you are being listened to, it is time for a new stylist.  Your Stylist should be able to answer questions about your hair type and face shape.  They should also be able to teach you how to style your hair and recommend the correct professional styling products for your style and texture.  Your Salon should be a clean, welcoming environment.  If you aren’t experiencing these things, please come see us!

GHD Haircutting Class Today

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

GHD doesn’t just make a great flat iron, or styler as they call it, they shared a rockin’ texturizing technique with us today.   So often when someone shares hair cutting with you, it’s a ‘cut’.  This methodology is great when you first  start out, but doesn’t make for a lot of creativity.  As you progress through your career, a stylist takes bits and pieces from each concept and can then apply them to individual face shapes and textures.   What makes it even more refreshing is that this education was in-salon and complimentary!   Thank you, GHD!

Shampoo How-to

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

We all shampoo our hair.  That being said, let’s make sure that we are doing it right.  Proper hair care results in better looking hair and better use of product (less waste!).

SHAMPOO  First, make sure that your hair is very wet.  Apply about a nickel size amount of shampoo (depending on length of hair) and emulsify it between your hands.  Rub your hands together and count to five.  Apply the shampoo to your hair and rub your scalp, not your hair.  Shampoo is primarily made to clean your scalp because that is what produces the oil.  The dirty part is our scalp, not our hair!  If your shampoo does not get ‘foamy’, add more water by sticking your head under the shower nozzle quickly.  If that doesn’t do the trick, add a little more shampoo, massage, then rinse.  Shampoo is to be applied only at the scalp.

CONDITION  This may be the MOST important trick in the business of washing hair!  Towel blot your hair before you shampoo.  You don’t need to dry it all the way or wring it out.  Simply use a towel to absorb excess moisture.  Put a towel over the shower door and watch an amazing thing happen.  You will use less conditioner and have healthier hair.  Apply your conditioner starting at the ends making sure that you emulsify.  Because the ends are dry and older, they need the conditioner first.  Apply a small amount of conditioner, if any, to the scalp.  Over Conditioning the scalp will make your hair fall flat.

DEGTANGLE  Detangle your hair as soon as you can when you get out of the shower.  If your hair starts to dry tangled, even when it’s in the towel, it will put undue stress on it.  Hair is the most fragile when it is wet so be careful to detangle it with a wide toothed comb.  Apply a small amount of detangler beginning at the ends.  Fine to medium textured hair can use a light spray detangler such as Nioxins’ Bliss or Pureologys’ Color Max.  Medium to coarse hair that needs more control should use a creme based product such as Redkens’ Iron Repair or Crema Leave In.

Curly Hair Advice

Monday, February 1st, 2010

If your hair is curly you are very lucky!  Men and women with curly hair have body and shape that most only dream of.    However, curls are willful and will lead a life of their own if you don’t set some boundaries.

Your perfect haircut- Shoulder length or longer hair tames curls by giving them a little weight.  Layers should be no shorter than six inches and bangs should be cut dry.  For a wilder, edgier look  have it cut shorter.

Never have your hair cut with a razor!  It will leave your ends split, frizzy and thin.  Use a hydrating shampoo, conditioner and be sure to deep condition once a week.  Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Condition, along with Pureology Nanoworks (for structure and strength) are ideal.  Another product to try is Alterna’s Curls Shampoo and Conditioner.  Two of our favorite styling products are Real Curl by Pureology and Blown Away Gel by Redken.
